European Cluster Conference 2010
Creative Industries and the Experience Economy
Creative industries have become an important emerging industry in EU Member States in recent years, their employment share being about 2.9 per cent (2008). Creative industries firms operate within complex social environments and they cluster together as other industries, however often based on different types of collaborations. Although creative industries seem to be heavily concentrated in urban agglomerations or in capital cities, there are also examples of medium sized cities where clusters and cluster initiatives in creative industries are significant.
An important and less-known aspect of creative industries clusters are their cross-sectoral linkages and their beneficial impact on other industries and on the whole regional economy. Creative firms induce an eminent knowledge flow to the wider economy and the spillover effects influence positively the innovativeness of a wider range of firms through supply chain relationships and labour mobility. To this end, the objective of the session is to discuss the role of creative industries clusters for innovation and economic development and to assess what could be the key policy measures to support them.
QUESTIONS to be tackled by the session:
- Are new cluster concepts and approaches needed to foster creative industries clusters?
- How different is cluster management in creative industries in comparison with other sectors?
- What role do creative industries clusters play for economic development? Which other industries depend most on creative industries’ outputs?
- What framework conditions should be set right for fostering creative industries clusters and their positive linkages to other industries?
